What is The Art of War about?

Sun Tzu's ancient Chinese treatise argues that supreme excellence in war is winning without fighting. Across thirteen brief chapters it covers deception, terrain, spies, timing and morale, teaching a commander to win through preparation, intelligence and positioning so that battle, when it happens at all, merely confirms a victory already secured. It has been strategy's core text for two millennia.

Key ideas from The Art of War

Win Without Fighting

The highest skill is breaking the enemy's resistance without battle: attack strategies and alliances first, cities last. Prolonged war ruins even the victor, so speed and economy of force govern everything.

All War Is Deception

Appear weak when strong, near when far, disordered when disciplined. Shape what the enemy believes and you shape what he does, so information, spies and misdirection outrank raw force.

Know Both Sides

Know the enemy and know yourself and a hundred battles hold no danger. Most defeats trace to self-ignorance: fighting on ground, at times, or with forces that flatter your assumptions rather than reality.

Lines worth keeping

  • To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.
  • Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, defeated warriors go to war and then seek to win.

Is The Art of War worth reading?

Yes, if only because it takes an hour: the text is barely thirty pages. Its value depends on translation and on your tolerance for aphorism, much of it is common sense stated beautifully, and business applications are usually strained. Read a well-annotated edition for the context, and be suspicious of anyone who cites it constantly.
